The following year, when Mia and Luca travelled to the pearl farm for Amanda’s birthday, it was with some news of their own—they gave to Amanda the best gift they could: she was going to be an older cousin.

In the end, they’d conceived quite by accident, and not learned of Mia’s pregnancy until she was four months along. The surprise had been a very welcome one—by then, they were both ready. If Mia had entertained any doubts of Luca’s sincerity about his desire for children, they were completely wiped away by his reaction.

‘Luca, are you crying?’

‘No, Mia Cavallaro,’ he’d drawled, all alpha male, except for eyes that seemed, to Mia, just the tiniest bit moist. ‘Now sit down immediately and prepare to spend the next five months being totally pampered.’

She laughed. ‘I’m pregnant, not made of glass.’

‘I don’t care.’ His nostrils flared. ‘You are pregnant with my baby and while I cannot physically carry the baby, I can do everything else.’

‘Luca?’ She pressed a finger to his lips. ‘I’m still me—the same person I was yesterday, who went surfing with you. Remember?’

‘Cristo.’ He paled. ‘That was stupid.’

‘No.’ She laughed. ‘It’s fine. Everything’s fine.’ She reached for his hand and pressed it to her stomach. ‘Everything’s going to be fine.’
